The Bulgarian unmanned aircraft developer Dronamics announced on Thursday the launch of a new defence platform based on its cargo drone, the Black Swan. The initiative aims to address a critical national security gap - continuous airborne early detection and target acquisition against potential threats, ensuring control over European airspace, the company said.
For its first defence solution, Dronamics will collaborate with Munich-based HENSOLDT, a globally active manufacturer of defence sensors.
The result is a fully European Airborne Early Warning (AEW) system that combines the Black Swan’s key strengths - endurance, payload capacity, and range - with HENSOLDT’s state-of-the-art mission sensor technologies. According to Dronamics, this integration positions the aircraft as the most capable European Strategic Class III unmanned aerial system in its category.
The partnership between the two companies delivers an entirely European-built unmanned airborne platform equipped with HENSOLDT’s MissionGrid suite featuring MissMarvin mission management software and PrecISR Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) surveillance system, enabling detection and targeting of airborne, ground and maritime threats.
The joint solution is designed to address critical gaps in national airspace coverage, strengthening both Europe’s defence and civil protection capabilities. Demonstrations are scheduled for later this year, followed by deployment focused on reinforcing Europe’s Eastern flank, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic region, the statement said.
