The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued a first-level yellow code alert for heavy precipitation on Wednesday for seven regions across Bulgaria, according to the institute’s weather warning map.

In the northwestern regions  of Vidin, Vratsa and Montana, rain is expected to turn into snow, with a risk of snow cover formation. In other regions, snow cover is expected to form in mountainous areas.

The weather on Wednesday will be cloudy, with rain in the western half of the country, spreading to eastern regions by the evening. Significant rainfall is expected in southwestern and northwestern Bulgaria. As temperatures drop in the afternoon and on the night before Christmas, rain will turn to snow in many areas of northwestern Bulgaria, the Fore-Balkan region, and high-altitude western plains. Winds will be moderate, temporarily strong in the Danube Plain and eastern regions, blowing from the northeast.

Highs will range between 3°C and 8°C, around 3°C in Sofia.

In the mountains, conditions will be cloudy with snow in many places. Winds will be moderate and temporarily strong from the south-southeast, and from the south-southwest at higher altitudes. Mountain passes will experience blizzards and snow drifts. Maximum temperatures are forecast at around 3°C at 1,200 meters and minus 2°C at 2,000 meters.

According to NIMH’s weekly forecast for December 25–30, prepared by duty meteorologist Anastasiya Stoycheva, Christmas Day will be cloudy with widespread precipitation: snow in western and northern Bulgaria, and rain in the Upper Thracian Plain and along the Black Sea coast. Snow cover will form, and blizzards are expected on mountain passes in the Balkan range. Significant snow and rain are expected in the western half of the country and in the Rila-Rhodope region.
