Bulgarian racing driver Nikola Tsolov made his official debut in Formula 2, clocking the 18th fastest time in the practice session at the Lusail International Circuit ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix.

The Bulgarian driver, who competed in the lower Formula 3 class this season and finished second in the overall standings, was given the opportunity by the Campos Racing team to race in Formula 2, the final step before the highest category, Formula 1.

In the practice session, Tsolov posted a time of 1:40.087 minutes, finishing 1.431 seconds behind Leonardo Fornaroli of Invicta Racing, who topped the timesheets with 1:38.656 minutes.

Sweden’s Dino Beganovic (Hitech) was second, 0.104 seconds off the pace, while Ireland’s Alex Dunne (Rodin Motorsport) ranked third, 0.602 seconds behind.

Qualifying is scheduled for 6:10 pm local time on Friday and will determine the starting grid for Saturday’s sprint race and Sunday’s feature race.

Tsolov will compete in Formula 2 next week in the season-ending round at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
