Bulgarian Posts is marking the 100th anniversary of the Sofia Philatelic Society with a new postage stamp presented at the Sofia Philatelists’ Club, the institution said here Tuesday.
The new stamp is part of the Famous Bulgarians – Philatelists series and is dedicated to Petko Karaivanov, the only internationally recognized Bulgarian philatelic expert and patron of the Society.
The portrait and the entire graphic design were created by portrait artist Rosen Toshev. Bulgarian Posts said the artwork is based on a family photograph from 1926, with the background featuring one of the four known imperforated BGN 0.25 stamps, which is among the rarest classic European issues. The miniature sheet also features the emblems of the Union of Bulgarian Philatelists and the Sofia Philatelic Society.
The Sofia Philatelic Society was founded on November 27, 1925. It marked a new beginning for philatelic collecting in Bulgaria after the First World War and later provided the foundation for the establishment of the Union of Bulgarian Philatelists thirteen years on, Bulgarian Posts noted.
