New Czech metro trains for the Sofia Metro were presented on Thursday at the Obelya depot in Sofia. The ceremony was attended by Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, Sofia Metro Executive Director Nikolay Naydenov and the Czech Ambassador to Bulgaria Miroslav Toman.
The new Czech trains are composed of four carriages, with each train having a capacity for 762 passengers, Naydenov noted, adding that the trains can reach speeds of up to 90 km/h.
"For us, the metro is a strategic priority," Terziev emphasized, noting that the new trains will replace the oldest Russian metro trains running on metro lines 2 and 4 and will help reduce the interval for movement on the second metro line.
He pointed out that after the completion of tests in the Czechia, the second and third metro trains will be transported to Bulgaria by the end of 2025 for tests in real conditions, after which the remaining five trains will also be sent, with the last train expected to arrive in Bulgaria in May 2026. Terziev also announced that work is currently underway on the construction of 10 new metro stations.
