Varna Airport officially inaugurated its new Gate Garden area on Friday, marking a significant expansion in passenger capacity – by approximately 40%. The unique open-air space, covering nearly 2,000 square metres, was introduced as part of the airport's drive to enhance comfort, sustainability, and efficiency.

Airport Director Dimitar Kostadinov described the facility as the first of its kind in Europe – a terraced, landscaped zone featuring three boarding gates, relaxation areas, retail outlets, and a children's play zone. The innovative concept is not only designed to elevate the passenger experience but also to lower carbon emissions compared to traditional terminal expansions.

The development includes upgrades to the existing terminal and aims to improve service quality and operational flexibility, particularly within the infrastructure linked to Bulgaria’s participation in the Schengen Area.

The total investment in the project exceeds EUR 9 million.

“This new space allows passengers to immediately experience the spirit of Varna’s seaside the moment they arrive,” said Varna Regional Governor Andriana Andreeva, who praised the airport’s forward-thinking approach.

Denitza Weismantel, Senior Vice President Global Investments and Management at Fraport Twin Star, the airport’s operator, emphasized the addition of three new gates as a key milestone. The project was also lauded by the company’s new CEO, Michael Reusch, and his predecessor Frank Quante.

The unveiling event brought together representatives from the business community, industry organizations, and local government, including Varna Mayor Blagomir Kotsev.
