A range of infrastructure, social, educational and cultural projects are reshaping the urban and social environment in Silistra and the municipality’s settlements, Mayor Aleksandar Sabanov said at a ceremonial Municipal Council session marking the city’s holiday on Monday.

He highlighted completed energy-efficiency upgrades of the Havana and Odrin residential blocks, funded through Bulgaria’s Recovery and Resilience Plan. He stressed that more than 100 families are expected to benefit from lower heating costs and improved living conditions. Renovation of the Silistra Home for the Elderly has also been completed, and residents are expected to return to the refurbished facility.

Sabanov recalled that three new buildings in the village of Aydemir have been completed to provide five social services for adults with physical disabilities and people requiring specialised support. He pointed out that the first stage of an integrated territorial investment project with Tutrakan includes the full renovation of four central streets, two new social services for elderly people and adults with disabilities requiring medical care, upgrades to five school buildings and renovation of social housing at the Albena dormitory.

Among the major state-funded projects is the renovation of Silistra’s Drama and Puppet Theatre, which Sabanov hopes will be completed next year. Community centres are also being renovated, while eight new children’s playgrounds have been completed. He noted that road improvements cover 12,786 metres of streets, while the next phase of street-lighting upgrades will reach the municipality’s remaining villages.

The mayor warned that inflation and rising construction costs are complicating projects and called for state-funded indexation to ensure their completion.
