site.btaArchaeologists Continue Excavations of Roman Baths at Ancient Ratiaria
Archaeologists are continuing excavations of the Roman baths of the ancient city of Ratiaria near Archar in Vidin Region (Northwestern Bulgaria), Dr. Zdravko Dimitrov, head of the archaeological research from the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NAIM-BAS), told BTA on Wednesday.
More than 100 metres of the drainage channel have already been examined, Dimitrov noted, adding that the team has uncovered parts of what was likely the central bathing area, including a caldarium and hot-water pools. Numerous Late Antique alterations have made the site complex, meaning the entire sector cannot be completed this season. Researchers are also mapping the drainage galleries and looking for the point where the channel connects to Ratiaria’s main sewer system.
The excavations of the baths will continue until the end of October, with on-site conservation and restoration planned alongside the work. The project is funded through the state programme for priority sites, with EUR 230,000 allocated in 2026.
