The potential for direct flights from Burgas to Spain were discussed at a meeting between Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov and the Spanish Ambassador to Bulgaria Miguel Alonso Berio here in Tuesday, the municipal press centre said.

Nikolov pointed out that many young people from Burgas study in Spain and that such flights would be useful not only for tourists, but also for students and workers. The mayor noted that Burgas Airport is almost closed during the winter, but a direct line to Spain could change that and would be beneficial for the entire region.

Berio highlighted the strong demand for direct flights between Sofia and Madrid, adding that a similar route from Burgas is likely to attract significant interest as well. The Spanish ambassador also showed keen interest in the defence industry companies based in the Burgas Industrial Park, noting that Spain is seeking cost-competitive options for aircraft engine repairs. He pointed out that a facility for a company specializing in this activity is already under construction in the park. Berio also announced that he plans to attend the 2026 World Paella Day Cup, scheduled to take place in Burgas from 19 to 21 June.

At the meeting, it became known that Spanish teachers are ready to participate in training programmes at the Roman Language High School in Burgas, and that the seaside city is cooperating with the Basque Autonomous Republic and the TECHNALIA research centre on the Regions for Climate project, as well as with the Spanish city of Gijón on the Clear Cities project.
