March 22 is much more than a town holiday, it is a day when we honor the glorious past of Veliko Tarnovo, Mayor Daniel Panov said on the occasion of the town's holiday on Sunday.

Panov recalled that Tsar Ivan Asen II wrote some of the most glorious pages in Bulgarian history, telling about the great victory at Klokotnitsa in 1230 and the Second Bulgarian Empire, as well as about the Tarnovo Patriarchate as the main pillar of Orthodoxy and the achievements of the Tarnovo Literary School. He emphasized that in 1879 Tarnovo was the first town in Bulgaria to celebrate its own holiday.

Panov called on the politicians who are guests of the town today to be statesmen, not party members, and invited them to be united, not divided. "Don't come only on holidays, but also come when we have problems and lend us a helping hand," he stressed.
