A cross-border project in Dimitrovgrad will aim to present the historical craft of transporting goods and people on the Maritsa River with rafts, canoes and boats, project coordinator Petya Tischeva said on Thursday.
The craft, which existed until the middle of the last century, will be recreated in a green inter-block space in Dimitrovgrad through children's swings resembling water vessels, information signs and QR codes. In addition to two playgrounds and a gym, the entire space will be improved and equipped with new modern lighting and video surveillance. A tourism strategy will be developed with an emphasis on crafts and traditions in the cross-border region.
The Regional History Museum in Dimitrovgrad will prepare a study of life on Maritsa in the past and a trilingual book with a volume of 120 pages will be published on its basis, Museum Director Antoaneta Stancheva noted. An exhibition with photos on the topic is also planned, which will be traveling across the country. In addition, the community centre in the village of Raynovo will organize a two-day boat trip to Edirne with the participation of about 60 people.
The cross-border project will be implemented jointly with Edirne Municipality under the INTERREG Bulgaria - Turkiye programme, with a total worth of nearly EUR 1 million.
