site.btaOver 5,000 Sofia Residents Take Part in Sofia Rides Giro Event
Over 5,000 Sofia residents and guests took part in the Sofia Rides Giro cycling event on Sunday, the press centre of the Sofia Municipality said.
The start of the event was given from Orlov Most [Eagles' Bridge], and the column was led by Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev. The municipal administration emphasized that this was the largest cycling event in the history of the capital.
The event preceded the final of Stage 3 of the Giro d'Italia, which will finish in Sofia on Sunday at the National Assembly Square next to the Tsar Osvoboditel Monument. In the final third stage, the peloton of 178 riders will cover 175 kilometres. The first section of the stage climbs gently toward the mountain resort of Borovets, while the final 75 kilometres are mostly downhill.
Temporary traffic restrictions have been introduced in the city centre and on main boulevards in the capital. Over 800 police officers are involved in organizing traffic and security in Sofia for the cycling tour.
