Danube - Drought - Problems
The heat waves and drought across most of Europe has brought the level of the Danube to critically low levels in some parts of its Bulgarian section. At Lom, the water has receded far beyond the protective embankments, and large stretches of land have emerged from the river. Just upstream of Lom, an entire island about one kilometre long has appeared in the middle of the Danube. As a result, the river is currently flowing through separate channels, making navigation more difficult. Local people say that low water levels have been typical for August over the past two decades. On days of negative water level, deposits of lignite coal emerge from the riverbed and locals would harvest coal, dry it, and use it to heat their homes during the winter. Danube - Drought - Problems
The heat waves and drought across most of Europe has brought the level of the Danube to critically low levels in some parts of its Bulgarian section. The situation is a force majeur and without precedent in decades. The Ruse river authority called it "a scourge for shipping" and said that navigation has been practically brought to standstill.
