BTA Tuesday opened a National Press Club in the southwestern town of Petrich. The ribbon was cut by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, Metropolitan Seraphim of Nevrokop, Petrich Mayor Dimitar Bruchkov and Petrich Municipal Council Chairman Svetla Danailova.

In his opening remarks, Valchev said there are three groups of arguments in favour of having a BTA national press club in Petrich on a par with the other large towns in Bulgaria: demographic, historic and economic.

Petrich has a population of nearly 27,000 and if the 24,500 residents in the nearby Sandanski area are added, it makes a large community that deserves to be present in the news flow. "People in the region deserve to hear about the events happening here and to find reasons to stay to live and work here," he said.

As far as history is concerned, the Petrich region has had a long history and been important for Bulgaria for centuries, said also Valchev mentioning as an example that archaeologists continue to make important discoveries in the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica.

As for the economic arguments in favour of having a National Press Club in Petrich, the BTA Director General said that local business is well developed and the BTA coverage will help it attract new investment.

The Petrich Mayor, Dimitar Bruchkov, said that it is a privilege for the town to have a BTA National Press Office. He said that Petrich is as important as the regional capitals in Bulgaria (even though it is not), in terms of news worthiness thanks to its population size, economy and politics.

He vowed to support the National Press Club's projects and work.

Metropolitan Seraphim blessed the new press club and said he sees the good opportunities for partnership between BTA and various institutions, including the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. He said that his eparchy will gladly cooperate with BTA.
