A group of 100 schoolchildren of Bulgarian origin, accompanied by their teachers, are visiting Bulgaria between September 7 and 13. The visit is organized at the initiative of the Bulgarian Municipality in Moldova (BMM) and at the invitation of the Bulgaria-Moldova parliamentary Friendship Group.

According to information provided by Lilia Sarsaman, acting head of the Education Department of the Taraclia District, the programme includes trips to Pleven and Panagyurishte, where students from Taraclia, Tvardita, Valea Perjei, Corten, Parcani, and Stoianovca will learn about the history of Bulgaria’s central regions, the country’s liberation from Ottoman rule, as well as its culture and traditions. The itinerary also features concerts, volleyball tournaments, and chess competitions.

BMM Chair Georgi Barbarov told BTA that in late April and early May he had addressed a letter to National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova and noted that this appeal had produced results. Barbarov explained that it had been disheartening to see Romania providing summer programmes for 3,000 Moldovan children, while Bulgaria until now had offered only 50 spots, with transportation costs covered by the parents. “That was the reason I turned to Parliament. I am glad that our efforts have finally borne fruit,” he said.

Barbarov emphasized that a key role in making this initiative possible was played by MP Galin Durev, Chair of the Friendship Group between the parliaments of Bulgaria and Moldova.
