In the field of culture, the role of the public service media goes beyond the usual popularization of products and events; these institutions are supposed to safeguard cultural values. "We should work with everyone who creates culture," Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) Director General Milen Mitev said during the first panel, "Culture in the Media," of the 20th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media, which opened at the BTA National Press Club in Sofia on Saturday. The annual World Meetings of Bulgarian Media are organized by BTA.
BNR runs six music groups, which held a total of 51 concerts in 2024 and made over 1,000 minutes of studio recordings and over 5,000 minutes of live recordings, Mitev said. They are the living memory of the nation's musical culture and art, and help preserve many works in the archives. "With our music groups, we popularize Bulgarian culture and art in Europe and around the world," he said.
He also discussed the numerous contests and cultural initiatives organized by BNR. Radio theatre holds a special place as a genre. There is a competition for people with visual impairments and a national children's competition for literary compositions, he added.
