Bulgaria's naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) has significantly expanded scientific research in Antarctica, the ship's Commanding Officer Radko Muevski told BTA here on Friday. He took part in a ceremony marking the fifth anniversary of the vessel's incorporation into the ranks of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy.
Commander Muevski said the ship has enhanced both the quality and scope of research over the past four Antarctic expeditions by enabling Bulgarian and international scientists to reach remote islands and peninsulas far beyond the areas accessible by boats, sledges or on foot. The vessel allows researchers to collect samples dozens of nautical miles from Bulgaria's Antarctic base on Livingston Island, supporting a wider range of scientific projects both at sea and on shore.
He added that the ship and its crew have helped transport materials for three major facilities at the St. Kliment Ohridski Antarctic Base: a large storage building, a modern laboratory expected to serve researchers for at least the next decade, and a joint laboratory with the United Arab Emirates. The vessel has also supported collaborative projects involving scientists from Montenegro, Greece and Romania.
Looking ahead, Muevski said he hoped Bulgaria would preserve this strategic capability and eventually acquire a second research vessel to expand polar and ocean research while providing more training opportunities for Naval Academy cadets.
