Addressing Wachau Forum held in Stift Goettweig, Lower Austria Saturday, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said the advance of the Wagner fighter towards Moscow puts to question the safety of Russia's nuclear warheads and chemical weapons. "According to the latest news, the forces of the Russian private military company Wagner are advancing rapidly towards Moscow without encountering serious resistance, and this introduces a new dynamic and poses a new challenge for us," Radev said.
"If the security situation in Russia continues to deteriorate, we must think again, as we did in the time of [former Russian President Boris] Yeltsin, what will happen to the thousands of nuclear warheads and the huge stockpiles of chemical weapons in Russia," he added.
He also said: "We have a new source of instability and we have to be very careful. I hope that the European institutions and NATO, all of us, will not remain mere bystanders, but will consolidate our efforts and take measures to protect our countries and guarantee our security."
The head of Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has rebelled against senior Russian military leadership and announced Saturday that he has entered the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and is in control of a number of Russian military sites there. Prigozhin accused Russian forces of attacking his fighters in Ukraine and killing many of them. He also urged the Russian defence minister and the chief of the Russian general staff to come to Rostov-on-Don for talks with him.
Shortly after Prigozhin's statements, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an address to the nation in which he said that what was happening was a stab in the back to the State and the people of Russia and promised to severely punish the rioters.
