The delivery of new SUVs for the Armed Forces is one of the small investment projects that has had a big impact on the personnel and capabilities of all the armed forces and commands. A second phase is planned with the delivery of another 320 SUVs by the end of the year, said the Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, here on Monday. "I hope that will bring to an end the era of UAZs and ZILs," he added.

Admiral Eftimov was speaking at a news briefing after the end of the large-scale exercise Balkan Sentinel at the Koren military training area near Haskovo.

The effect is great, people are happy and appreciate the new modern equipment and what the State is doing, he said. Asked about the introduction of new and larger drone systems, he said the process started with the idea of buying commercial drones for the Land Forces to first build habits in the personnel. "The development of drone systems nowadays is known, the pace is very great indeed. That is why work is being carried out both at national and European level on mechanisms to acquire such high-tech systems," the Chief of Defence said.

He praised the manoeuvres within the exercise, in which he said four nations had demonstrated their strength, capabilities and capacities. The aim is for the forces to have the same or compatible software that allows planning, organising and conducting combat operations, he specified.

More than 1,700 troops with about 350 pieces of combat and support equipment participated in Balkan Sentinel.
