In connection with the introduction of the euro as Bulgaria's official currency and the technological and technical adjustments entailed by the changeover, the POS terminals at the border crossings will be unable to handle card payments of fines for road traffic violations by December 31, 2025 and January 1, 2026, the Bulgarian Border Police announced on Monday.

Such payments can be made by the rest of the methods envisaged in the regulatory framework.

The Interior Ministry said that the post offices, where leva can be exchanged for euro without commission charge in the course of six months as from January 1, 2026, will be patrolled by police. Security Police details will be assisted by gendarmerie in protecting the peace around post offices countrywide, the Ministry said.

It advised caution when changing money and urged people to call 112 or contact the nearest police station immediately if fraud or other abuse is suspected.
