Students of the Rakovski High School in Bolhrad, Odesa Province, Southwestern Ukraine received awards in a children’s drawing competition named “Playing with Letters,” organized by the Municipal Council of Tundzha, Yambol Region, Southeastern Bulgaria. The competition was occasioned by Alphabet Day (May 24), the main cultural holiday of Bulgarians at home and abroad, the school’s Deputy Principal Lilia Sakali said for the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) news service BG World.

The competition was for Bulgarian children in Bulgaria and abroad. Elena Viktorova of the Rakovski High School in Bolhrad received the highest award, and the remaining 22 entrants from the school’s lower educational levels (grades 1st to 8th) got certificates.

Sakali commented: “The kids showed great enthusiasm about the theme and demonstrated creativity, imagination and respect for the Bulgarian alphabet.”

Approximately 200 Bulgarian children from Bulgaria and abroad submitted drawings for the competition, Tundzha Municipal Council Chair Atanas Hristov told BTA.

Bolhrad is one of the main settlements in Ukraine which are home to ethnic Bulgarian communities. The school was established in 1858.
