The deficit of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) has decreased to BGN 215 million, NHIF Governor Petko Stefanovski told journalists after a meeting of the NHIF Supervisory Board.

During the meeting, board members discussed the report on the budget’s performance, both revenues and expenditures, for the first nine months of the year. The current budget implementation shows that BGN 22 million in health insurance contributions have not yet been collected, Stefanovski added, noting that these funds are expected to be collected by the end of the year.

At present, the NHIF budget is balanced across its various categories, as planned, he said, but he would not make a forecast about how the NHIF will end the financial year.

In July, Stefanovski had said that the NHIF’s deficit stood at BGN 400 million.
