“I support the President's decision to submit a proposal to the National Assembly to hold a referendum on the Bulgaria lev, although it seems a bit late," MECh leader Radostin Vasilev told BTA.
“A month before the convergence report, I hope the National Assembly to support it, and fellow MPs colleagues to support it, as we will do, because perhaps the prevailing opinion among the public is that now is not the time to adopt the euro, while in Parliament politicians think otherwise,” Vasilev said. And when there is such a discrepancy, the best way is to hold a national referendum, he believes.
“I do not think that such a referendum would be unconstitutional, arguments will always be found not to produce it, as happened with the one initiated by Vazrazhdane,” the MECh leader further said. According to him, it is necessary to emphasize whether or not there should be a referendum, and now constitutionalists can say whether it is unconstitutional or not. “For me it is not,” Radostin Vassilev stressed. “I think that the head of state's proposal will be rejected because another majority prevails in Parliament, which believes that it has more competences to determine Bulgaria's future, but it will probably be a nice debate,” he added.
