Burgas Airport will be temporarily closed from March 7 until March 30 for maintenance activities related to improving the safety of the runway surface and the lighting system before the start of the summer tourist season, the concessionaire company, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, said on its website here on Thursday.

Amid growing tensions from mayors in the region of Burgas in response to the Airport's closure, the company released an official statement on February 29, explaining in details the its top priority to renovate the infrastructure of Burgas Airport as a modern airport attractive to airlines and passengers, meeting all safety and security requirements.

The company said that on March 31, Ryanair, will operate the first flight for the season to Burgas Airport from Krakow. From April, the airline will also operate flights from Vienna and London Luton Airport, while in June it will operate flights from Dublin, Budapest, Bratislava, Kaunas, Gdansk and Poznan. Wizz Air plans to operate 7 routes from the second half of June to Vienna, Katowice, Gdansk, Lublin, Warsaw, Budapest and Debrecen. The year-round route to London Luton will also continue to be operated.
