Birthday
Sofia, November 26 (BTA) - Bulgarian opera prima Christina
Angelakova will celebrate her 70th birthday in the Ballroom of
the National Art Gallery, the organizers said. The event is
scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on November 28. Friends and fans will
have the opportunity to congratulate the world-renowned mezzo
and tireless champion of Bulgarian culture.
Angelakova graduated from the Sofia Academy of Music, in the
class of Prof. Sima Ivanova, and then from the Santa Cecilia in
Rome. She specialized Baroque vocal style in Venice and
continued at the Centre for Development of Young Singers at
Milan's La Scala, where her teacher was the world-famous singer
Gina Cina.
Her career began with a three-year contract with La Scala, where
Angelakova made her debut as Ulrica in Verdi's "Un Ballo in
Maschera". This was followed by Jocasta in Stravinsky's "Oedipus
Rex", Adalgisa in Bellini's "Norma", Leonora in Donizetti's "La
Favorita", and Elizabeth in Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda", among
others. Angelakova participated in performances at La Piccola
Scala concerts and throughout Italy with the Virtuosos di Roma
Orchestra, famous for its Baroque repertoire.
Along with her singing career in Bulgaria (a soloist of the
National Opera since 1976), Angelakova performed successfully on
the stages of La Scala, Roma Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin,
Munich, Budapest, Duesseldorf, Liege, Leipzig, Bologna, Palermo,
Ravenna, and Bolshoi Theatre.
From 2001 to 2004 Angelakova was the first woman director of
Sofia's National Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 2004 - 2008 she
organized some of the most significant events in Sofia's
cultural calendar as President of the National Opera Foundation.
She has been the artistic director of the Mozart Days Music
Festival in Pravets (Western Bulgaria) since 2012.
In 2004 Christina Angelakova was made a Commendatore (Commander)
of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity for her
outstanding services to the culture of Italy. LI/BR
