First Group of
23rd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition
Lands on Livingston Island

Sofia, November 26 (BTA) - The first group of the 23rd Bulgarian
Antarctic Expedition successfully reached the Bulgarian St
Kliment Ohridski Base on Livingston Island (South Shetland
Islands), the base commander Yordan Yordanov reported, cited in
an announcement sent to BTA on Wednesday by the Director of the
Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, Prof. Hristo Pimpirev.

Eighty per cent of the buildings are buried under 2 metre of
snow, and a lot of work is needed to start its normal operation.
The thick snow cover prevented the unloading of a container
holding a Manitou loader, and the crew of the Chilean ship
"Aquiles" postponed the operation for January, Yordanov said.

The second group of the expedition left Punta Arenas, Chile, on
board the Spanish Navy ship "Hesperides". They will arrive at
the base in three or four days' time.

The third group, consisting of Prof. Pimpirev (expedition
leader) and mountaineers Nikolai Petkov, Doichin Boyanov and
Alexander Shopov, will depart from Sofia on December 10. LI/LG
