Workers in child and school healthcare in Sofia protested in front of Sofia City Hall's building on Tuesday, demanding an increase of the basic salaries in the sector to BGN 1,890 from BGN 1,350. The protesters blocked traffic along Moskovska Street in downtown Sofia.

The protest was organized by the Confederation of Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) and the Podkrepa Confederation of Labour. The trade unionists described as a "mockery" the proposal made by Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev on Monday for a pay rise by BGN 100 as of April 1. "Sofia City Hall is mocking us: BGN 100 for 200 people and nothing for 2,000," CITUB Vice President Todor Kapitanov.

Another demand is for the money for work clothes to be increased by BGN 50 to BGN 500 a year. The compensation for retirement should be increased to nine gross salaries.

Kapitanov said the two unions would meet next week to discuss strike action.

The protesters called on Mayor Terziev to come talk with them.

On Monday, Terziev met with representatives of CITUB and Podkrepa. The sides agreed on an increase by BGN 100 of the monthly salaries in the sector.
