Bulgarians have a lot of fears and vague hopes for the Green Deal, political scientist Ivan Krastev said here Tuesday. He was among the speakers on the first day of a three-day Green Transition forum. He said the fears are over higher prices and the closure of certain industries, and the hopes are focused on new jobs.
Politically, the green transition will not work if it relies on the mobilizing power of fears, because fear has a paralyzing - not mobilizing - effect, Krustev argued.
He said that many societies around the world think that their governments have dealt relatively well with the COVID crisis and the consequences of the war in Ukraine, but these positive assessments have not increased trust in governments.
And he explains why: "Before these crises, governments were saying 'there is no money', during these crises, countries were awash with money but having money scares people - it doesn't give them peace of mind".
Krustev also said that Bulgaria will pay a high price because for a long time there were no Parliament-appointed government and likened the situation to the effect of on-line schooling for children, which, once it ended, showed its failures.
