The green transition in Bulgaria is "total anarchy" and goes without any plan, according to Assen Christov, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Eurohold Bulgaria. He was among the speakers on the first day of the Green Week 2023 forum on green transition in central and eastern Europe. "We do not know, nor have we planned for the future, because strategy and planning are interrelated, and Bulgaria has not planned what part of its energy it wants to produce from nuclear power plants in five, ten or fifteen years. We do not know how much we want to get from coal-fired plants and hydropower plants," Christov said.

He also said that no new photovoltaic plants will be built as there is no more transmission capacity.

According to Christov, Bulgaria has "two diamonds in the energy sector" - nuclear energy and the energy produced in pumped storage hydroelectric power plants (PHPP). He believes that the N-plant "is being deliberately killed".

Christov also said: "Our energy sector, no matter how much we boast about it, is going down if we do not take measures." He suggested that an energy board should be set up to do all the necessary research and develop a strategy to be passed by the National Assembly into a law and that any future government should be bound to implement it.

He sees a risk that 10 years from now Bulgaria would be "buried in rubbish" from photovoltaics and will have to start importing electricity from Greece. The reason is that banks plan to recoup the money they have provided to be invested in photovoltaics, over a 10-year period but at some point the energy from photovoltaics will become so cheap that the investment cannot pay back and then electricity will have to be imported.
