Archaeologists are exploring the northeastern interior of the early Byzantine bath in the ancient and medieval town of Aquae Calidae near Burgas, the Burgas Regional History Museum reported on Monday. Since the location of the caldarium was established last year, it has been fully revealed and is relatively well-preserved.

The research is carried out with funding from the Municipality of Burgas.

The excavation of the hypocaust chamber and the ancient canal continues. The presence of nymphaeum confirms the town's active use in Antiquity, and so do the discovered finds: a fragment of a votive tablet with an inscription, exquisite terracotta, parts of lamps, coins. Most of the coins found are from the 4th century.

A new find from this year's archaeological campaign are several medieval dwellings above the early Byzantine structures. They show dense development from the late 12th to early 13th centuries.

The artefacts found and uncovered back in the years at Aquae Calidae - fortified walls, Roman baths, various medieval rooms - are accessible to the public through built walkways.
