The Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU has brought back onto the agenda the final decision required to approve a EUR 90 billion loan for Ukraine. EU ambassadors are expected to vote on the measure on Wednesday without debate, a presidency spokesperson said.
According to the spokesperson, if the decision is approved, it will be followed by a written procedure among EU member states. The loan requires unanimous approval, and Hungary has blocked the move over the past four months.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos told members of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday that, following the elections in Hungary and the defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the EU is expected to move swiftly on both the loan decision and the start of accession talks with Kyiv.
