Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev led the parade of nations ahead of the official opening ceremony of the BAUHAUS Down Syndrome World Championships Bulgaria 2026 in Sofia on Sunday.

The parade started at St Nedelya Square and proceeded along Vitosha Boulevard to the area in front of the National Palace of Culture (NDK), where a special stage had been erected for the opening ceremony. Residents and visitors lined the route to greet the athletes representing countries from around the world.

Addressing the competitors, coaches and parents, Terziev said it was a privilege to take part in the procession alongside them.

"I would like to wish you several unforgettable days in which you can give your very best. Thank you for coming to Sofia and making our city even brighter," the mayor said.

He wished the participants success in the competition and thanked them for what they represent.

More than 400 athletes from 27 countries are taking part in the championships, which run until June 19. Competitors will contest medals in athletics, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, tennis and table tennis.
