President Iliana Iotova officially opened the BAUHAUS Down Syndrome World Championships Bulgaria 2026 in Sofia on Sunday.

Addressing athletes, coaches, parents and guests during the opening ceremony, Iotova said the event was not only a sporting competition but also "a triumph of the human spirit over isolation, prejudice and loneliness".

She welcomed participants from 27 countries and described Sofia as "the capital of smiles, courage and limitless human potential" during the championship.

Iotova thanked Federation for Adapted Physical Activity Bulgaria President Slav Petkov, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Sofia Municipality for their support in organizing the event. She also praised the parade of nations through central Sofia, saying thousands of Bulgarians had the opportunity to greet the athletes and wish them success.

Addressing the competitors, Iotova said they demonstrated that human potential knows no limits and that they could always count on society's support.

She expressed particular support for the Bulgarian team and wished all participants success in the competition before officially declaring the championship open.

More than 400 athletes from 27 countries are taking part in the championships, which run until June 19. Competitors will contest medals in athletics, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, tennis and table tennis.
