site.btaBulgarian Nikola Tsolov Finishes Second in Barcelona F2 Race, Regains Championship Lead

Bulgaria's Nikola Tsolov delivered an outstanding tactical drive to finish second in the Formula 2 feature race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday, reclaiming the lead in the drivers' standings.

The Campos Racing driver also achieved a career first by securing two podium finishes in the same race weekend, following his third-place finish in Saturday's sprint race.

The race on the 4.675-kilometre Barcelona circuit was defined by tyre strategy. Nearly half of the field started on soft tyres, while Tsolov opted for the harder compound. Although the drivers on hard tyres initially lost ground, they were counting on the superior pace of fresh soft tyres in the closing stages.

Tsolov executed the strategy perfectly. He spent much of the opening stint running in eighth place and moved up to second after all drivers who had started on soft tyres completed their pit stops by lap 22, opening up a six-second advantage over Noel Leon.

The Bulgarian pitted on lap 24 for soft tyres and rejoined in ninth place, beginning his charge. Displaying impressive pace, he was among the fastest drivers on the track and climbed to fourth well before the finish.

Ahead of him was title rival Gabriele Mini, while Alex Dunne and Rafael Camara were battling for victory. Camara soon overtook Dunne for the lead, leaving Tsolov with fewer than ten laps to erase a four-second gap to Mini.

Five laps from the finish, Tsolov closed in on the Italian and overtook him on the exit of Turn 10 to move into third place. By lap 35, he had also passed Dunne to take second.

Although he found himself with clear track ahead, Tsolov remained seven seconds behind race winner Rafael Camara and was unable to close the gap. Nevertheless, the Bulgarian extracted the maximum possible result from the race.

The second-place finish secured his second consecutive podium in Barcelona and propelled him back to the top of the Formula 3 drivers' standings. Tsolov now leads the championship with 86 points, three ahead of Mini, ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix in two weeks' time.
