Caretaker Minister of Youth and Sports Dimitar Iliev said that Bulgaria and the coastal city of Burgas are ready to host the Giro d’Italia start, calling it a historic moment and the first time a sporting event of such scale is held in the country. Speaking ahead of the official team presentation in Burgas, he said the organization is at a high level and will leave lasting impressions on both athletes and spectators, thanking all institutions and municipalities involved in the preparations.

In 2026 Bulgaria is hosting the Grande Partenza event of the 109th Giro d'Italia. Running through key centres of culture and wonders of nature, the route is divided into three stages, each taking one day from May 8 to 10.

Iliev noted that the race route showcases Bulgaria’s natural beauty and said the second stage would be particularly challenging for riders, praising the athletes as world-class competitors. He acknowledged organizational difficulties, including infrastructure issues and tight preparation timelines, but said the event was successfully completed thanks to strong teamwork and commitment from all involved.

The Giro d’Italia begins its 2026 edition in Bulgaria on May 8 in Nessebar, with stages continuing through Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv and Sofia.
