Competing for Bulgaria, Anina Zurbriggen failed to complete the first run of the women's alpine giant slalom at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

The Swiss-born 22-year-old, whose mother is Bulgarian, started with bib number 45 in her Olympic debut but missed a gate in the lower section of the course on the Olimpia delle Tofane piste in Cortina d'Ampezzo and was eliminated.

She is Bulgaria's only representative in women's alpine skiing and is also due to compete in the slalom on February 18.

Leading after the first run is world champion and Beijing 2022 Olympic silver medallist Federica Brignone of Italy.

The 35-year-old Brignone, who won the super-G title on home snow three days ago, clocked 1:03.23 minutes to take a lead of 0.34 seconds over second-placed Lena Duerr of Germany, who also has an Olympic silver medal from the mixed team parallel event at Beijing 2022.

Another Italian, Olympic downhill champion from PyeongChang 2018 Sofia Goggia, is third, 0.46 seconds behind. She has already won a medal on home snow, taking bronze in the downhill on February 8.

Defending champion Sara Hector of Sweden shares fourth place, 0.74 seconds back, with Italy-born Lara Colturi, who competes for Albania, and Thea Louise Stjernesund of Norway.

Olympic giant slalom champion from PyeongChang 2018 and world champion from Courchevel 2023, Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States, is seventh, 1.02 seconds off the lead.

The second run is scheduled to start at 2:30 pm.
