Between January and May 2026, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Bulgaria amounted to EUR 2.28 billion, according to preliminary data released by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) on Friday. The net inflow of FDI was EUR 1.74 billion higher than in the same period last year, when it stood at EUR 535.3 million, more than four times lower than the current figure.

FDI in January-May 2026 was equivalent to 1.8% of the country's forecast gross domestic product (GDP), compared with 0.5% of GDP in the corresponding period of last year.

In May 2026 alone, the net inflow of foreign direct investment into the country reached EUR 254 million, compared with EUR 258.9 million in May 2025.

According to preliminary data, the net flow of Bulgarian direct investment abroad in the January-May 2026 period was positive, amounting to EUR 3.2 million (0.003% of GDP), compared with a positive balance of EUR 54.1 million (0.05% of GDP) in the same period of the previous year. In May 2026, the net flow also remained positive at EUR 6 million, compared with a positive EUR 8.4 million in May 2025.
