Over 192 tonnes of food and feed from third countries were not allowed into the country after inspections at Bulgaria's border checkpoints in February 2026, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) said on Wednesday. A total of 29 shipments were stopped after official veterinary and phytosanitary control.

Among the rejected shipments were peppers, tomatoes, tangerines and pomegranates with an established excessive content of pesticide residues. Dried figs were stopped due to ochratoxin A, and hazelnuts and pistachios - due to the presence of mycotoxins. Shipments with dairy products, chicken meat, eggs were returned after checking the documentation of origin.

Twenty notifications have been created for the rejected consignments in the EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed.
