Bulgarian feature film Women Out of Order (2026), directed by Alexander Kosev, will have its Burgas premiere in the feature competition of the 11th Burgas International Film Festival, the organizers said on Tuesday.

Production team members and actors Julian Vergov, Alexandra Kostova, Martin Metodiev and Nikolay Urumov, together with screenwriter Neli Dimitrova, will attend the premiere as special guests. Kosev’s film follows four women confronting personal conflicts and life challenges, while exploring relationships, choice and inner transformation.

The film marks cinematographer Mihail Yanakiev’s feature debut. It was shot entirely in Burgas, with the story set around several of the city’s landmarks.

The festival’s second-day programme also features a short-film block with three titles competing in the international Best Short Film section: Class, directed by Rumi Kaul (the Netherlands), A Sky So Low, directed by Joachim Michaux (Belgium, France), and Pirateland, directed by Stavros Petropoulos (France, Greece).

The evening programme at the NHK Cultural Centre continues with a screening from Focus Austria, a special section devoted to leading contemporary European director Jessica Hausner. Audiences will be able to see her 2014 film Amour Fou.

At the same time, director Sunay Terzioglu will appear in person at the Ohlyuva Open-Air Stage to present his feature Bonds, Roots and Passions (Turkiye, 2025), part of the BIFF Black Sea selection. Terzioglu is also expected to speak about his personal connection to Bulgaria.

Tuesday’s side programme will be held at the Sea Casino Cultural Centre, where film critic and researcher Mirela Vasileva will lead the Enneagram creative workshop. The event will examine psychological types and their role in shaping film characters. Later, in Petya Dubarova Hall, Vasileva will present her book Scandinavian Cinema: Styles and Motifs, nominated for the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers’ 2025 Book of the Year award.

All screenings and programme events through July 25, 2026, are free of charge. Bulgarian films are screened with English subtitles, while foreign films are shown with Bulgarian subtitles.
