Mystery and what is not man-made in art are difficult to replicate, conductor Yordan Kamdzhalov told the Bulgarian News Agency. His nationwide tour, Mystery and Freedom, will begin with a concert at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia on June 6.
"Mystery has been an important part of art since time immemorial, since antiquity, and perhaps even earlier. Freedom is directly linked to the creative spirit, to improvisation, to that moment of supreme inspiration that is born on stage," he said.
The tour will continue on June 9 at the open-air theatre in Varna, June 11 at the open-air theatre in Burgas, July 5 at the Damascena Ethnographic Complex in the village of Skobelevo, Pavel Banya Municipality, Bulgaria, and August 10 at the Ancient Theatre of Plovdiv. Among the performers will be singer Sofi Marinova, the Genesis Orchestra, the Music Laboratory for the Human Self, and The Eastern Quartet from Switzerland.
Kamdzhalov said that this year’s programme is once again diverse and includes works from across Europe. There will be many Bulgarian motifs interwoven with Western European music. Elements of jazz, blues, baroque, classical music, modernism, improvisation and folklore will come together on stage, he added.
The conductor noted that he is immensely grateful to be able to work with the artists involved. He added that the project requires intense concentration, as more than half of the performance unfolds without musical scores. “There is a tremendous love for the search for the new, which also awakens long-forgotten old elements. We immerse ourselves deeply in a special kind of archaism, in ancient sounds that echo through eternity. This is part of the sound of Mystery and Freedom,” Kamdzhalov said.
"We begin in Sofia on June 6, and there is a good chance we will announce an additional performance," he noted. "We tried to do our very best to touch as many hearts as possible. It is not just about Sofia—it is about all of Bulgaria. We expect to reach between 10,000 and 15,000 people in total," he added.
