Sozopol Municipality signed a Memorandum of Cooperation for the Protection and Promotion of Local Intangible Cultural Heritage with the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe under the auspices of UNESCO Association, the municipal press centre said on Thursday.

The Municipality emphasized that the agreement lays the foundation for a long-term partnership aimed at protecting, preserving and transmitting the living traditions, knowledge and skills of the local community in accordance with the principles of UNESCO and the organization's 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Sozopol Mayor Tihomir Yanakiev noted that the cooperation is a strategic step towards the systematic and professional preservation of local traditions, as well as the involvement of younger generations in the process of their transmission. The preparation of the characteristic local sweet damga and the craft of knitting and repairing fishing nets will be amongst the priorities for the promotion of local intangible cultural heritage in Sozopol.
