Karlovo is commemorating the 189th anniversary of the birth of freedom fighter Vasil Levski and celebrating the city's official holiday on Saturday, the municipality said.
The celebrations begin at 9 am with a ceremonial Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Church. At 10.15 am, participants in a national tourist hike in the footsteps of Levski will be officially welcomed, followed by the ceremonial raising of the Bulgarian national flag and the flag of Karlovo.
A prayer service for the prosperity of the town and its residents will then be held, followed by a procession along Vasil Levski Street.
The Vasil Levski National Museum will host the presentation of awards by the Vasil Levski Foundation and the Vasil Levski Committee. The programme also includes a literary salon and an exhibition organized by Bulgaria’s National Assembly and the State Archives Agency.
The highlight of the celebrations will take place at 8.20 pm, when the flag of the Karlovo Revolutionary Committee will be ceremonially brought out from the Vasil Levski National Museum, followed by a commemorative procession.
President Iliana Iotova will take part in a traditional ceremonial military tattoo and roll call in the Vasil Levski square and deliver an address.
