site.btaCommission for Protection of Competition Greenlights New Sanitation Contracts in Six Sofia Districts

The Commission on Protection of Competition (CPC) has cleared Sofia Municipality to provisionally implement new sanitation contracts in Zones 3 and 4, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said at a City Hall briefing on Wednesday.

The CPC decisions, issued on Tuesday, cover Slatina, Poduyane and Izgrev, as well as Serdika, Nadezhda and Ilinden.

The move is another step toward a lasting solution to Sofia’s street-cleaning and waste-collection problems, Terziev said.

CPC’s decision may be appealed to the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) within three days. If an appeal is lodged with the SAC, “the saga continues,” Sofia Municipality representatives added.

“We believe we will be able to sign contracts worth around EUR 300 million and save EUR 250 million, while also meeting our other goals, such as phasing the contracts so they do not all expire at the same time in 18 of the 24 districts,” Terziev said.

He said they would ensure the municipality has the capacity to deal with problem areas or issues in several districts, and that a broad range of companies is involved in the work.
