In May, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) prevented the import of 43 consignments totalling more than 277 tonnes of goods from third countries following official veterinary and phytosanitary inspections carried out at the country's eight border inspection posts, the agency announced on Wednesday.

The non-compliant consignments included products of non-animal origin such as peppers, tomatoes, and lemons found to contain pesticide residues exceeding the permitted limits. During phytosanitary inspections, grapevine leaves were rejected due to an EU-wide import ban, while additional shipments of fruit and vegetables were denied entry because of irregularities in their phytosanitary certificates.

Among products of animal origin, imports of frozen fish, powdered ice cream mix, honey, and dairy products were also blocked, the BFSA said.

A total of 29 notifications were registered in the European Commission's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
