site.btaBNB's Project for Commemorative Euro Coin Dedicated to Bulgarian Alphabet Has Scientific Grounds, President Says
Head Of State Iliana Iotova said that it is completely reasonable for the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) to stand up for their project for a commemorative European coin dedicated to Bulgarian alphabet. The statement was made Friday at a ceremony in Sofia on occasion of Prof. Nikolay Nenovsky's entry into office as a member of BNB's Governing Council for a new six-year mandate.
Iotova stressed that institution's representatives should be brave in defending public interests, particularly this regarding the jubilee coin commemorating the Bulgarian alphabet. "We must defend our right as a community, since we were all brought up in a tradition to perceive the Cyrillic alphabet as Bulgarian”, she said.
According to Iotova, at global conferences featuring the Cyrillic alphabet, distinguished scientists have always described it as "Bulgarian alphabet". That is why the project is justifiable by both scientific and legislative benchmarks, she added.
Earlier on Friday, BNB representatives talked to BTA about the issue raised by a Eurozone Member State with its refusal of the project to be included in BNB's Monetary policy. Currently, the procedure of enacting the project is in stage of approval in compliance with the applicable European legal framework and the national legislation. "The approval procedure has not finished, and it continues in accordance with the established order," a BNB statement said. The Central Bank added that the current discussions are not tied to the expert technical assessment of the project.
As addressed in BNB's official press release, the institution will not publicly comment on statements made and correspondence exchanged during the procedure until after its full completion.
