site.btaPublic Council Members Take Part in Central Election Commission Candidate Hearings for First Time, President Says
Opening public hearings at the President's Administration building on Friday, President Iliana Iotova said members of the Public Council to the Central Election Commission (CEC) would take part for the first time in the vetting of candidates nominated for members by parliamentary represented parties and coalitions. Iotova said the participation of the Public Council was important because its members, representing non-governmental organizations, serve as an additional guarantee of democratic, fair and transparent elections.
Iotova recalled that Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria did not nominate a candidate for CEC deputy chair during consultations on the Commission's composition. She said the coalition had been given until June 11 to designate one of its nominees for the post, but no response had been received.
The President said a decree appointing the new members of the CEC would be issued after the hearings and would take effect on June 23. She explained that the current commission would remain in office until then because of the large number of partial elections scheduled in the coming weeks.
Addressing the 15 candidates, Iotova said restoring public confidence in the electoral process would be among the most important tasks facing the new CEC.
