site.btaPresident Iotova Attends Opening of Journalist Square in Veliko Tarnovo

President Iliana Iotova participated in the opening of Journalist Square in Veliko Tarnovo on Monday. The initiative was organized by the local branch of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists (UBJ), and was unanimously approved by the Veliko Tarnovo Municipal Council earlier in 2026.

Iotova said journalism cannot be diminished by social media, stressing that not everyone who writes online is a journalist. She highlighted the profession's key role nowadays in filtering information and helping people distinguish truth from misinformation in a complex world fraught with conflict.

Veliko Tarnovo Mayor Daniel Panov noted this is the third Journalist Square in Bulgaria and thanked local journalists for the initiative. He also pointed out the symbolic location in front of the country's oldest school, where journalism is taught as a subject.

The event was attended by UBJ Chair Snezhana Todorova, officials and a delegation of journalists from South Korea.
