President Iliana Iotova said young members of Bulgaria's guard units may have "different dreams and aspirations" but are united by "their great love for Bulgaria" during the first National Review of School, Children's and Student Guard Units in Sofia on Wednesday.
The event, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, was held under the patronage of the President at Prince Alexander I Square in Sofia.
Addressing participants, Iotova said anyone claiming there is no place for patriotism in the high-tech 21st century should "come to this square today" and see the young guards in their scarlet uniforms.
She described the event as symbolic, noting that it was taking place in front of Bulgaria's highest state institutions and represented "tradition and statehood".
"You have different wishes and different ideas about the future, but there is something that binds you forever – your great love for Bulgaria," Iotova told the young guards.
The President thanked teachers and guard unit leaders for instilling patriotism in the younger generation and urged participants never to forget they were born in "a wonderful Bulgaria with a glorious history".
She also highlighted the symbolism of the guard uniforms, saying they reflect the legacy of Bulgarian revolutionaries and national heroes, and called on young people to remain wise, open-hearted and loyal to Bulgaria.
