site.btaForeign Ministry Denies Allegations of VIP Flights from Middle East for Wealthy Bulgarians
Speaking to a press conference here on Tuesday, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Marin Raykov said that all Bulgarian citizens were treated equally during the evacuations taking place in the Middle East. Raykov denied allegations that VIP flights had been organized and that mainly wealthy Bulgarian citizens had been evacuated.
The Deputy Minister added: "Among the Bulgarian tourists vacationing in Dubai, there were very few socially disadvantaged people, so all of them were people with a certain social status."
Raykov reported that from the outset, Bulgarian missions were instructed to draw up lists of people who were priorities in terms of their humanitarian situation, such as mothers with children and people who needed vital medication. The missions provided lists with a total of 1,500 priority people, and all priority requests were fulfilled.
Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Nadezhda Neynsky said that more than 2,600 Bulgarians have been evacuated from the Middle East. A special flight from Riyadh to Sofia will take off on Tuesday night. On board are Bulgarian citizens from Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.
