site.btaDefence Minister: Bulgarian Territory Isn’t Used to Support US Operation in Iran
Bulgarian territory is not used in any way, not even logistically, to support the United States (US) operation in Iran, said caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov in a televised interview on bTV.
According to him, regarding the presence of American aircraft in Bulgaria, the US government has sent official notes clearly stating the purpose of their visit and the duration of their stay.
There could be up to 15 aircraft, fuel tankers, part of the US strategic fleet in Europe to support NATO operations, the minister said. The personnel number around 350 people, he added. There are no tasks related to the US operation in Iran, Zapryanov assured.
“Currently, we are in discussions with the American side and are at an initial stage,” the Minister responded when asked if it’s possible for the aircraft to be moved from Sofia airport. “When a decision is made, we will announce it,” he added.
The minister said that if a note from the US concerns a military mission on Bulgarian territory, the matter would be brought to Parliament through the government.
“We believe that Bulgaria, in fulfilling its allied obligations, strengthening collective defence and readiness, is in no way a target of the Iranian leadership,” said Zapryanov.
“In terms of missile defence, we can fully rely on NATO,” the minister also said.
